Jürgen Lenssen (born May 11, 1947 in Mönchengladbach ) is a German Catholic priest , former cathedral capitular of the Würzburg diocese , author of writings on the interpretation of art and artists .

Life

Jürgen Lenssen studied theology , art history and folklore in Würzburg , Münster and Osnabrück . On November 27, 1971, he was ordained a priest in Osnabrück by Bishop Helmut Hermann Wittler . He came to the diocese of Würzburg as chaplain , where he was curate and dean's youth pastor in Dittelbrunn from 1975 and pastor in Glattbach from 1981 . In 1988 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD . In 1989 he was appointed to the Ordinariatsrat in Würzburg, and in 1991 he was accepted into the cathedral chapter . Since 1992 he has been the director of the then newly established Art Collection Foundation of the Diocese of Würzburg . From 1999 to 2003 he was President of the German Society for Christian Art

In 2002 Lenssen led the redesign of the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten near Volkach , for which he created the celebration altar , the ambo , the choir stalls and an altarpiece. From 2007 to 2009 he led the large-scale renovation and redesign of the Würzburg Neumünster , in which he involved well-known contemporary artists. Altar , ambo and baptismal font , two reliquary shrines , the wheel candlestick in the Kilians crypt and the steles of the apostles in the Johannes crypt were created according to his designs. As of May 10, 2017, he is retired as cathedral chapter.

Honors

In 2007 Jürgen Lenssen received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon , in 2009 the Culture Prize of the City of Würzburg .

He is an honorary member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Franco-Raetia zu Würzburg in the CV .
