Röthel has been working with steel since 1995. His sculptures are massive - with the exception of a series of segmental arches - they are created from an individual, block-shaped original shape through folds, cuts, bends and twists in the forging process. Since the beginning of 2015, many of the larger works have no longer been created in the studio workshop, but in the production halls of SFG STEELforming GmbH in Burbach (Siegerland) , with which the American sculptor Richard Serra also works.

“The heavy steel, processed in enormous heat, is transformed under Röthel's artistic intervention into sculptures that are often filigree and fragile. They radiate a dynamic and lightness that almost make you forget the weight of the material. "

- bromer art gallery, 2017

The shape of the sculpture can always be traced back to the original format in the mind's eye. In his slender steles made of layered panels with meandering cuts in the center, an inherent energy seems to be discharged, which fans out the structure into jagged bundles of lines and entangles them with many voices.

Röthel's steel sculptures derive their effect from the clash of the physical presence and haptics of the material, the visible traces of the archaic work process and the delicate result of the form.

"Some of the metal cuboids seem almost figurative, lively, feeling in their posture, despite no resemblance to a human body."

- Berner Zeitung, 2017

In 2014 Röthel also began working on paper, initially with impressions of sculptures. In the last few years Röthel created pictures from handmade paper, which he worked on with steel rods and blocks; the work reveals the vulnerability, but also the strength of the paper.
