Psalm 11 in a 17th century academic Bible edition

The 11th psalm (according to Greek counting the 10th) is a psalm of David . The genre of the Psalm cannot be clearly determined.

shape

The form of the Psalm deviates from the usual scheme, which makes the genre unclear and controversial. The Old Testament scholar Hermann Gunkel finally classified it as a “trust psalm in the form of conversation”. Erhard S. Gerstenberger calls it a "disputing prayer" within the genre of the lamentations of an individual. Hans-Joachim Kraus assigns the psalm to the form group of prayer songs.

Usually the psalm is structured as follows:

  • Verse 1a: Trust in YHWH
  • Verses 1b – 3: Rejecting the advice of well-meaning friends
  • Verses 4–7: YHWH as a just judge and legal assistant to the persecuted

A division into stanzas is usually not made.

interpretation

The psalm is strongly shaped individually. According to Klaus Seybold, it is the personal testimony of a persecuted person who decided to take legal action, seek asylum at the temple and apply for criminal proceedings. Hermann Gunkel judges similarly: It is the subjective reaction of an individual poet to an emergency through no fault of his own.

Another direction sought by Oswald Loretz tries to interpret the psalm as a product of post-exilic scholarship that aims to modernize the texts of tradition.
