Psalm 136
The 136th psalm is a biblical psalm from the fifth book of the psalter .
content
Psalm 136 is a liturgy of thanksgiving. It probably belongs to the Passover tradition , but its use for other festivals is also conceivable. In this liturgy, a cantor develops a creed, to which the congregation answers with a fixed liturgical call (“for his goodness endures forever”).
The psalm is structured in such a way that, upon an introductory call (verses 1–3), praise to the Lord for his deeds as creator (verses 4–9), as Lord of history (verses 10–24) and as sustainer of life (v 25) follows. Verse 26 repeats the introductory appeal.
reception
Judaism
With Psalm 135 , Psalm 136 forms the Great Hallel of the Passover liturgy.
Christianity
The hymn Thank God, because it is good by Johannes Riggenbach is based on Psalm 136. Heinrich Schütz set the Psalm Danket der Herren to music, because it is friendly twice (SWV 32; 45). Georg Philipp Telemann created three church cantatas Thank the Lord, because he is friendly (TWV 1: 157; 1: 158; 1: 159). Heinz Werner Zimmermann composed the organ psalm 136 in 1955 .
