Heinz Werner Zimmermann grew up on Lake Constance , where Julius Weismann (1879–1950) was his first composition teacher from 1946 to 1948. After graduating from high school, Heinz Werner Zimmermann studied with Wolfgang Fortner in Heidelberg from 1950 to 1954 (also music theory at the Evangelical Church Music Institute there ). After the composition teacher examination (at the Musikhochschule Freiburg ) he became Fortner's successor in Heidelberg in 1954.

Heinz Werner Zimmermann was lastingly influenced by his preoccupation with American spirituals and classical jazz , as well as through personal contacts with the Heidelberg professor of musicology Thrasybulos Georgiades (1907–1977): his rhythm and language studies were an important stimulus for the composer.

Heinz Werner Zimmermann then worked as head of the Berlin church music school at the Johannesstift in Berlin-Spandau (from 1963 to 1976) and as a composition teacher at the Frankfurt University of Music (from 1975 to 1996).

Today, works by Heinz Werner Zimmermann are performed in many other countries besides Germany and the USA. His motets with double bass, his organ psalms and his church music "prose songs" have broken new compositional territory as well as his main choral symphonic works, the "Missa Profana" (internationally recognized with performances on three continents), the "Bible of Spirituals" and the "Symphonia Sacra" that have become known through numerous performances.

Heinz Werner Zimmermann received music prizes from the cities of Stuttgart and Berlin, the Villa Massimo grant (Rome) in 1965/66 , the Johann Sebastian Bach Prize (Stuttgart) in 1982 and the Wittenberg Award from the New York Luther Institute in 2001 . The award of an honorary doctorate by the American Wittenberg University in Springfield (Ohio) gave rise to three dissertations at other American universities, including one in 1970 at Stanford University in California: Allen Illick "The Choral Style of Heinz Werner Zimmermann"; Z. Randall Stroope "Later Choral Works of Heinz Werner Zimmermann"; Faythe Freese "The Hymns of Heinz Werner Zimmermann". In 2009, Heinz Werner Zimmermann received an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig. In 2012 he received the Federal Cross of Merit for his life's work .

Heinz Werner Zimmermann's most important music-aesthetic and music-theoretical essays as well as his catalog raisonné have been published in two collections edited by Friedhelm Brusniak : "Composition and Contemplation" (2000) and "Composition and Reflection" (2005).

Heinz Werner Zimmermann is married to the organist Renate Zimmermann .
