Gerhard Weinberger (born July 31, 1948 in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm ) is a German organist and professor of organ playing.

Career

Weinberger received his training from Franz Lehrndorfer from 1967 to 1972 at the University of Music and Theater in Munich in the subjects of organ, church and school music. In 1971 he was second prize winner in the organ category at the ARD International Music Competition .

Professional and musical activities

After two years as choir director at the St. Lorenz Basilica in Kempten , Weinberger was appointed to the Munich University of Music and Theater in 1974, where he taught until 1983 - from 1977 onwards as a professor for organ. From 1983 to 2011 he was full professor for organ and head of the church music course and the vocal soloist ensemble at the Baroque Academy at the Detmold University of Music . From 1984 to 2003 he also held a teaching position for organ at the University of Music in Würzburg .

He has made numerous CD recordings as well as a complete recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ works on important historical organs on the label cpo , which was awarded the 2009 German Record Critics' Prize in 2009. His international concert activities as an organist in Europe, Asia, North and South America have been going on for many years. There are also international master classes, record awards, jury activities and numerous radio recordings. In 1986 he founded the professional ensemble Die Deutsche Bach-Vocalisten , with which he had great international success. As a conductor, he mainly performed works from the 18th century. Together with his wife Beatrice-Maria Weinberger he also gives concerts with four-hand organ music. Weinberger is also the editor of organ music and sacred choral music, including the first complete scientific edition of the organ works by Johann Ludwig Krebs and the organ works by Robert Schumann .

He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the board of directors of the New Bach Society in Leipzig. In 2017 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
