biography

Franz Josef Stoiber received organ lessons from the Passau cathedral organist Walther R. Schuster and from his predecessor from Regensburg, Eberhard Kraus . After graduating from high school (1979), he pursued his church music and music theory studies at the University of Music Würzburg (organ with Günther Kaunzinger and Gerhard Weinberger , composition with Zsolt Gárdonyi ) and at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart (major in organ with Jon Laukvik ) and with the Vienna Cathedral organist Peter Planyavsky (organ improvisation).

After three years as a full-time musical assistant at the cathedral in Würzburg and as a lecturer for music theory at the Würzburg University of Music, Stoiber followed a call in 1989 as a lecturer for organ and music theory at the Academy for Catholic Church Music and Music Education, today's University of Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg .

In 1993 he was awarded third prize at the International Competition for Organ Improvisation in Schwäbisch Gmünd . In 1996 Stoiber was appointed cathedral organist in Regensburg and since 1997 he has also been an organ teacher at the Regensburger Domspatzen . In 2003 he received a full professorship for organ (focus on liturgical organ playing and improvisation ) at the Regensburg Church Music Academy, which he headed from 2003 to 2011 as rector.

Concerts, CD productions, guest lectureships (including in Germany, Portugal, Japan, Croatia and Russia), his compositional work, essays and book publications made him known nationwide. In addition to a broad organ literature repertoire, Stoiber places particular emphasis on organ improvisation .
