Emagramm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The emagram ( E nergie- Ma sse Dia- grams ) is a graphical representation of temperature and humidity .

The temperature and the moisture content of the atmosphere are displayed vertically at the individual heights.

The horizontal axis (X-axis) describes the temperature in degrees Celsius and the vertical axis (Y-axis) the altitude in meters and hPa. Since temperature and moisture content are displayed vertically in this type of diagram, the auxiliary lines (lines of the same temperature or Isotherm) of the temperature axis (X-axis) is shown inclined by 45 degrees to the right. Because under normal conditions the air in the troposphere becomes colder with increasing altitude (approx. 0.65 K / 100m at 100% relative humidity (moist adiabatic) and about 1K / 100m under 100% relative humidity (dry adiabatic)) and the tendency about this decrease corresponds, a registered temperature profile runs approximately vertically.

This representation is helpful because it makes the structures of the temperature profile particularly clear.

In this it differs significantly from the Stüve diagram , which has a right-angled coordinate system and is therefore better suited for the representation of high-temperature profiles that extend beyond the stratosphere .

The emagram is very often used in aviation (especially glider flying) in order to be able to predict thermodynamic conditions (e.g. updrafts, cloud base, inversions).
