Kurt Suttner

Kurt Suttner (born August 8, 1936 in Regensburg ) is a German music teacher and choir director. He founded the Via Nova Choir , with which he has received prizes in numerous international competitions.

life and work

Suttner studied school music and singing at the State University of Music in Munich . As a student he was a co-founder of the Capella antiqua Konrad Ruhlands . Following his training, he initially worked as a music teacher at various Munich high schools. He later switched to the German School in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa as a music teacher and worked as a music advisor at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Madagascar .

After his return to Germany, in 1967/68 and from 1972 to 1974 he taught choral conducting at the Munich University of Music. In 1975 he was offered a chair for music education at the University of Augsburg , which he held until 1998. He made numerous concert tours abroad with the university chamber choir. From 1989 to 1999 Suttner was also director of the Bavarian Singing Academy , where he devoted himself to training young singers.

In 1972 he founded the via-nova-chor Munich in Munich , with which he dedicated himself in particular to the interpretation of contemporary choral music. From the amateur choir he formed an ensemble of professional quality. In close contact with composers such as Peter Michael Hamel , Robert Helmschrott , Max Beckschäfer , Moritz Eggert , Kay Westermann , Wilhelm Killmayer , Harald Genzmer and Günter Bialas , numerous premieres and world premieres were performed. He has won prizes and awards with the choir in numerous international competitions, such as the Culture Prize of the Bavarian State Foundation , the Advancement Prize of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation , prizes at international choir competitions in Tours, The Hague, Cork, Budapest, Tolosa, and the special prize for contemporary choral music in the German Choir Competition in Fulda. At the beginning of 2008 he handed over the leadership of the choir to Florian Helgath .

He is co-editor of the anthologies Chor aktuell , Chor aktuell junior , Chor aktuell Basis and editor of the carus novus series at Carus-Verlag Stuttgart.
