Psalm 82

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 82nd Psalm (according to Greek counting the 81st) belongs to the series of Asafpsalms . He reports of gods or "sons of the Most High" over whom the judgment of YHWH comes.

interpretation

The main problem of the Psalm is the question of who is meant by the "gods", "sons of the Most High". The following possibilities come into consideration: The "gods" are:

  • Gods in the real sense
  • Princes of the heathen
  • Princes of Israel (like "princes of the Gentiles" meant ironically)

The usual solution, as suggested by Hermann Gunkel , for example , is: In Judaism of that time , pagan national gods and their power were accepted. So the earthly peoples have corresponding heavenly archetypes (Dan 10.13 EU ), which in turn are subordinate to YHWH. So the judgment of YHWH must also meet these sons of God.
