The 36th psalm is a psalm of David from the first book of the psalter .

The psalm can either be understood as the prayer of a persecuted person who has found refuge in the temple , or it speaks purely figuratively of refuge with God. In it, the prayer praises the goodness of God, with whom he finds himself safe and given. The psalm closes with a plea to God to bestow his righteousness on those who honor him and to protect them from the stalking of the wicked.

The Vulgate version of verse 10 “ in lumine tuo videbimus lumen ” often serves as a heraldic motto. It is u. a. Columbia University motto .

The refrain and the first stanza of the song Lord, your goodness extends as far as the sky is, is based on verses 6 and 7 of Psalm 36.
