Frants Buhl
Frants Peder William Meyer Buhl (born September 6, 1850 in Copenhagen , † September 24, 1932 in Hillerød / Nordsjælland, grave in Asminderød) was a Danish orientalist and Old Testament scholar .
Career
Buhl studied at the University of Copenhagen , where he was a lecturer in the Old Testament from 1880 to 1890. He then received a call to the University of Leipzig , stayed there until 1898 and then returned to Copenhagen, where he held a professorship for Semitic languages until his death . In the academic year 1911/12 he was the rector of the university.
Buhl worked on the publication of the 13th edition (1915) and the following versions of the Hebrew and Aramaic concise dictionaries on the Old Testament by Wilhelm Gesenius . For the Biblia Hebraica by Rudolf Kittel he edited the Book of Psalms and the Book of Esther (published in 1930 and 1935 respectively). In his article Poetry among the Israelites (in the " Real Encyclopedia for Protestant Theology and Church ", Volume 4, 1898) he laid down the literary genres and the life situations of biblical poetics and thus anticipated the study of criticism of form . His canon and text of the Old Testament first appeared in German in 1891, was translated into English by John Macpherson in 1892 and is one of his most influential works (see also Biblical Canon ). In Danish he wrote, among other things, Den Gammeltestamentlige Skriftoverlevering (German translation 1885, English translation 1892), Det israelitiske Folks Historie (1892, 8th edition 1936) and Muhammeds Liv ("Das Leben Muhammeds", 1903, 3rd edition of the German translation 1961).
Buhl had been a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences since 1900 . In 1899 he was honored with the Dannebrogden .
