Johann Baptist Friedrich Fischart , called Mentzer (ie "Mainzer" after his father's origin; *  1546 or 1547 in Strasbourg , †  1591 in Forbach ), was an early New High German writer and poet.

Life and work

Fischart attended the Latin school in Worms and then studied at the University of Tübingen . From 1566 he traveled to Flanders and Paris . From 1570 he was back in Strasbourg, where most of his works were published by his brother-in-law Bernhard Jobin's publishing house . In Basel he received his doctorate in law in 1574. From 1581 to 1583 he was an advocate at the Imperial Court of Justice in Speyer . In 1583 he became a bailiff in Forbach.

Fischart, who was first a Lutheran , then a Calvinist , wrote against the decline of morals, the papacy and the Jesuits . Almost all of Fischart's works are based on models, often using the Knittel verse . His wordplay art is masterful , his numerous word inventions famous (the joking name goose wine for water is mentioned for the first time in one of his works). Many of his works are considered examples of brutality . His most famous work is the Affentheurlich Naupengeheurliche Geschichtklitterung (1575), a free and to sealing a translation of François Rabelais work Gargantua , that the term Geschichtsklitterung served as the origin.
