Michael Schilling (Germanist)

Michael Schilling (born March 28, 1949 in Kiel ) is a German specialist in German studies and a university professor .

Life

Michael Schilling grew up in Hamburg, attended the Johanneum there and studied German , classical philology and pedagogy at the University of Hamburg from 1969 to 1974 . In 1977 he became Imagines Mundi with his dissertation . Metaphorical representations of the world in emblematics . to the Dr. phil. PhD. After two years on a project position, he followed his academic teacher Wolfgang Harms to Munich in 1979 . There he completed his habilitation in 1988 with a thesis on early modern photo journalism. After visiting and substitute professorships in Hamburg, Potsdam, Münster and Rostock, he accepted the professorship for older German literature at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg in 1996 , which he held until his retirement in 2014. His research deals with German and Latin literature from the 11th to 17th centuries. His main research interests include the media history of the early modern period (especially the illustrated leaflets), animal spades, emblems, baroque literature and the literary history of Magdeburg. He publishes the author's lexicon of the 16th century (together with Wilhelm Kühlmann and others) and the series of German illustrated leaflets of the 16th and 17th centuries (together with Wolfgang Harms) and was co-editor of the journals Euphorion and Archive for Cultural History for many years .
