Benjamin Schmolck ( Schmolke ) (* 21st December 1672 in Brauchitschdorf the Duchy of Legnica , † 12. February 1737 in Schweidnitz ) was a German church hymn writer of the baroque .

Life

Benjamin Schmolck, son of pastor Martin Schmolck, attended high school in Liegnitz and was enrolled in the theological faculty in Leipzig in 1693 . During this time he began to emerge poetically and received the title of imperial poeta laureatus as a student . After completing his studies in 1697, he helped his father in Brauchitschdorf until he was appointed as a deacon at the Schweidnitzer Friedenskirche in 1702 . Here he spent the rest of his life, from 1714 as chief pastor and court preacher . At the same time he taught at the Gnadenschule, where the poet Johann Christian Günther was one of his students. Because of his close proximity to the famous North German preacher, Schmolck was also called the "Silesian Rist ".

The cantatas he wrote, Das Saiten-Spiel des Hertzens , appeared in multiple editions and was set to music by various composers, including Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel and Johann Friedrich Fasch . Schmolck composed a total of 1183 songs, some of which are still sung today, e.g. B. Open the beautiful gate for me ( EG 166), Jesus should be the watchword (EG 62), Decorate the feast with May (EG 135), Dearest Jesus, we are here to live your words (EG 206) and Lord, hear, Lord, hear (EG 423). His books of edification and prayer are widespread and have been reissued. Theologically they can be assigned to Lutheran orthodoxy .
