The Dukan Dam ( Arabic سد دوكان, DMG Sadd Dūkān ; also Dukan Lake) is the largest dam in the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan . It is located on the riverside town of Dukan in the province of as-Sulaimaniya , about 55 kilometers north of the provincial capital Silêmanî .

Construction of the Dukan Dam began in 1954 and was completed in 1959. The British company Binnie and Partners provided the design for the construction of the dam . Five turbines, each with an 80 megawatt generator, were installed to generate electricity. The dam is of great strategic importance for the province of Silêmanî as it is the only dam there besides the Darbandichan Dam . He is responsible for water and electricity supply throughout the province.

Reservoir

The Dukan Lake has a storage volume of 6.87 billion cubic meters , with a water surface of 270 square kilometers . It serves to supply the population with water, but also for fishing and as a tourist attraction. In 2013, planned Emaar Properties and the Kurdish Faruk Group , a 2 billion - dollar heavy project to the area near the lake at a resort rebuild.
