Psalms of David (Heinrich Schütz)
Psalms of David is the title of a collection of sacred, predominantly polychoral compositions by Heinrich Schütz , who had learned Venetian polychoralism from Giovanni Gabrieli . The collection was published in Dresden in 1619 as his Opus 2 and contains 26 individual works, which were given the numbers 22 to 47 in the Schütz-Werke -verzeichnis (SWV). Most are settings of an entire psalm in the German translation by Martin Luther .
The title page says: "Psalms of David / sampt / Quite a few motets and concerts / with eight and more voices / by the way, two chapels that some / can be used / for three and four choirs at will". A few motets and concertos complement the psalms, and the instrumentation is for eight or more voices and two instrumental groups in multi-choir compositions.
history
In 1619 Schütz became court conductor at the court of Elector Johann Georg I in Dresden, as the successor to Rogier Michael . On June 1st, he married Magdalena, the daughter of court official Christian Wildeck, the “Elector of Saxon Land and Tranck Tax Accountant”. Schütz dated the preface to the press on the same day. He dedicated the work to the elector.
In the preface, Schütz mentions the inspiration from his teacher Giovanni Gabrieli at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice with its various galleries, which were used for multi-choir music-making : “that he composed terrible German psalms in the Italian manner for which [he] loved [his] and the world famous praeceptore Mr. Johan Gabrieln / ... / was diligently led ... “.
collection
Schütz selected 20 psalms, two of which he set to music twice. He also implemented a hymn verse, the first verse of Johann Gramann's “ Now praise, my soul, the lords ”, as well as texts from the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah . Most, but not all, psalms end with the doxology (in the table for short: dox), " Glory to the Father ".
