Friedrich Kiel

Friedrich Kiel (* 8. October 1821 in Puderbach ; † 13. September 1885 in Berlin ) was a German composer of the Romantic and music teacher. He was one of the most respected composition teachers of his time and was one of the outstanding composers of the generation between Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms .

Life

Friedrich Kiel's parents were the teacher Johann Jost Kiel (1791–1863) and Johanne Marie Jung from Puderbach (Bad Laasphe). The family moved to Schwarzenau (Bad Berleburg) in 1827 when Friedrich was around six years old . The son started playing the piano and composing on his own initiative. In the next few years he received music lessons from his father and from the Elsoff teacher Karl Batta (1807-1893). He later dedicated VII fugues for the pianoforte to him , which he composed in July 1844 in Berlin.

The superintendent Appollo Kneip presented it to Prince Albrecht zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg in 1835 at an orchestral rehearsal for the court orchestra. He then received violin lessons from the Prince's brother, Prince Karl. He was also allowed to take part in the court orchestra, he created compositions for solo violin with orchestral accompaniment as well as variations for orchestra.

From 1838 to 1840 he received composition lessons from the chamber musician and flautist Caspar Kummer (1795-1870), who lived in Coburg . From May 1, 1840 to 1842, he was concertmaster of the court orchestra and music teacher for the children of Prince Albrecht in Berleburg . During this time he created compositions for piano with orchestral accompaniment, overtures for orchestra and works for piano for 2 and 4 hands.

On the basis of a scholarship from King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. , He studied from 1842 to 1844 with Siegfried Dehn , the custodian of the music of the Royal Library in Berlin. From 1844 he worked as a freelance composer and as a piano and harmony teacher.

Faded memory: Friedrich Kiel's first resting place in Schöneberg today

The extremely successful world premiere of his Requiem in F minor op. 20 and another performance in Leipzig made him famous all of a sudden. His Missa solemnis in C minor op. 40 and the oratorio Christ were also widely recognized, so that he was offered the post of Leipzig Thomaskantor , which he did not accept in order to be able to stay in Berlin. From 1866 Friedrich Kiel became a composition teacher at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin for three years ; he was awarded the title of professor in 1868. A year later, Kiel became a member of the Senate of the Royal Academy of Arts in the “Music” section.

In 1870 he was awarded the Red Eagle Order and at the same time became a knight of this order. On June 21, 1876, the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg awarded him the Knight's Cross II. Class of the Duke of Saxony-Ernestine House Order.

Other important stages in his career were the Academic University of Music (founded in 1869), where he was the head of a composition class and, from 1882, the five-member directorate of the Royal Academic University of Music Performing Arts (alongside Joseph Joachim , Ernst Rudorff , Adolf Schulze and Philipp Spitta ), as well as the Akademie der Künste , to which he was appointed head of a master class for composition.

In a traffic accident in September 1883 with a horse and cart in Berlin, his health was badly damaged. He experienced the world premiere of his oratorio The Star of Bethlehem Op. 83 on April 25, 1884 in the House of Royal Arts in Berlin. In the winter of 1884/85 he resigned from his offices because of the consequences of his accident; he died on September 13, 1885 in Berlin. He was buried in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg . On October 7, 1971, he was reburied in the cemetery of his birthplace in Puderbach.

Works

The composer

Kiel composed in all genres except symphony and opera . Since he worked and taught as a pianist, half of this work is devoted to piano music for 2 and 4 hands. In addition, he created chamber music works for various ensembles, a piano concerto , smaller choral works a cappella and with instrumental accompaniment, as well as large choral forms: two requiems , a missa solemnis and two oratorios . The Friedrich Kiel Society has been working with the Dohr Cologne publishing house since 1993 to distribute Kiel's works in revised new and first editions.
