Franz Ries (born April 7, 1846 in Berlin , † June 20, 1932 in Naumburg ) was a German violinist , composer , music dealer and music publisher .

biography

Franz Ries was the youngest son of the violinist and composer Hubert Ries . He trained as a violinist under the direction of his father and Friedrich Kiel in Berlin and at the Paris Conservatory under Lambert Massart and Henri Vieuxtemps . However, after a short, brilliant career due to nervous problems, he had to give up the virtuoso career in 1873 and then turned to the music trade . From 1874 he ran his own range in Dresden , to which a concert management was also affiliated. In 1881 Ries merged his business with the publishing house founded in Berlin in 1872 by Hermann Erler (1844–1918). From then on, the new company operated as Ries & Erler and is still in existence today.

In 1884 Ries sold his music shop, which was still in Dresden, and concentrated on his work as a publisher and occasionally appeared in a small circle as a violinist. After Erler's death, he continued to run the publishing house on his own. In 1924 he retired from business life, moved to Naumburg and left the publishing house to his son Robert (1889–1942).
