Heinrich Urban
Heinrich Urban (born August 27, 1837 in Berlin ; † November 24, 1901 there ) was a German composer, violinist and music teacher.
Life
As a child, Urban was an alto in the Royal Cathedral Choir and later a member of the Royal Chapel. He studied in Berlin with Hubert Ries , Ferdinand Laub , Friedrich Kiel and Richard Hellmann and perfected his training in Paris. His most prominent composition was the symphonic poem Der Rattenfänger von Hameln . He also composed several overtures ( Fiesco , Sheherezade , To a Fastnachtsspiel ), an opera ( Konradin ), a symphony ( Spring ), a violin concerto, chamber music works and songs. From 1881 he taught at the Kullak Academy . His students included u. a. the harpsichordist Wanda Landowska , the pianists Ignacy Jan Paderewski and Józef Hofmann and the composers Mieczysław Karłowicz , Maurice Arnold Strothotte , Felicjan Szopski , Friedrich Niggli , Max Marschalk and Ernst Baeker . His brother Friedrich Julius Urban also became known as a composer and as a singing teacher.
