Richard Hellmann (born June 22, 1876 in Schönebegk ; † February 3, 1971 in New York ) was a mayonnaise producer in the USA and was one of the richest men in this country.

Life

Hellmann was born the son of a master saddler . He learned the trade of a businessman . Due to his training in the Spreewald he had acquired extensive knowledge in the production of mayonnaise. After working in Halle (Saale) and Hamburg , he finally went to the USA in 1903. Two years later he opened a deli in New York. He married the daughter of a deli and started making mayonnaise , which found many buyers in the United States. He thus achieved great prosperity.

He supported his old homeland Vetschau with donations. With his support, the knight's hall of the city palace was renovated, a gymnasium expanded and a tennis court laid out. In 1929 Hellmann set up a foundation of 500,000 Reichsmarks in favor of the city of Vetschau , which was supposed to generate an annual profit of 42,000 Reichsmarks.

On May 3, 1929 Hellmann was made an honorary citizen of the city of Vetschau. The certificate was handed over on September 21, 1929 by representatives of the city council of Vetschau and his cousin, the master saddler Hugo Hellmann, in New York.

Commemoration

In the turmoil of history, the foundation's assets later perished. Nothing is known today about the whereabouts of a large part of the capital. On May 25, 1992, however, the foundation was re-established on the basis of the sale of some of the foundation's remaining properties. The foundation still supports social issues today.

In Hellmann's hometown of Vetschau, a street (Richard-Hellmann-Straße) and a square (Hellmannplatz) are named after him. In the Vetschauer restaurant Zum Brauhaus there is a Richard-Hellmann-Stube , created on a private initiative .
