On a concert tour to Austria he accompanied the coloratura singer Carlotta Patti , Adelina's sister , as a solo player. He formed a piano trio with Xaver Scharwenka (piano) and Heinrich Grünfeld (cello) and gave chamber music evenings at the Berlin Singakademie from 1871 to 1881 . This was followed in 1881 by an appointment to Cologne as concertmaster of the Gürzenich concerts there and as a violin teacher at the Rheinische Musikschule, and in 1884 as first concertmaster at the Cologne city theater . In Cologne he also founded the Gürzenich Quartet with Emil Baré (second violin), Josef Schwartz (viola) and Friedrich Grützmacher junior (cello), which has made successful concert tours in Germany, Belgium, England, Italy and Denmark.

He was a member of the united Cologne Freemason Lodge Minerva to the patriotic association and Rhenana to humanity . In 1894, after the death of Jenny Meyer , he took over the Stern Conservatory in Berlin. The conservatory flourished under his leadership.
