Carl Fredrik Edmund Neupert (born April 1, 1842 in Christiania , † June 22, 1888 in New York ) was a Norwegian pianist, composer and music teacher.

Life

The son of the music dealer and piano teacher Herman Wilhelm Neupert performed as a pianist at the age of seven. At the age of 15 he went to Berlin and studied piano with Theodor Kullak and composition with Friedrich Kiel . In 1864 he gave a concert in the house of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin , which was enthusiastically received - he was compared to Franz Liszt , Anton Rubinstein and Carl Tausig . From 1866 to 1868 he taught piano at the Stern Conservatory .

After a successful concert in Copenhagen, Niels Wilhelm Gade brought him to teach at the Conservatory of Music , where he taught until 1880. He advised Edvard Grieg on the composition of his piano concerto in A minor. Grieg dedicated the work to him, and it premiered in Copenhagen in 1869.

In 1880 he accepted the offer of the brothers Anton and Nikolai Rubenstein for a piano professorship at the Moscow Conservatory. Because of the political unrest after the assassination of Tsar Alexander II , he returned to Norway in 1881 and founded the Klaverskole for Børn og Viderekomne in Christiania . However, he was unable to assert himself against the competition from the popular piano teachers Erika Nissen and Agathe Backer Grøndahl and went on a concert tour to the USA. There he became professor for piano at the newly founded music academy in New York in 1882.

As a composer, Neupert became known for piano works, including around 120 studies ( 24 Concert Etudes , 24 Octav Etudes , Poetiske Etuders ) and character pieces such as Valse noble, Romance og Ballade , Før Slaget , Norwegian Ballade and the 8 Studier Collection .
