Johann Caspar Kummer (born December 10, 1795 in Erlau near Schleusingen , † May 31, 1870 in Coburg ), also Gaspard Kummer (G. Kummer), was a German flautist , composer and music teacher of the late Viennese classical period .

Life

Kummer first came into contact with music as a ten-year-old after being given a small third flute. He later completed an apprenticeship as a town piper in Schleusingen with the town musician Neumeister. The job of the town piper required versatility; Kummer learned the violin, horn, trumpet, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, violoncello and double bass and also taught himself another instrument: the flute. Kummer only learned a single year from his teacher Neumeister, then he trained in music theory with the cantor of Schleusingen Gottlob Abraham Stäps . From 1813 to 1814 Kummer took part in the campaigns as the clarinetist of the Coburg Hof-Hautboisten Choir. From 1835 Kummer worked as a flautist in the castle chapel of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in Coburg and in 1854 took over the leadership of the chapel. In November 1868 he had a stroke from which he recovered. Another attack on May 1, 1870 ended his life.
