Erlau is a district of Schleusingen in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .

geography

Erlau is located on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest southeast of Suhl in the lower valley of the Alder and is surrounded by about 600 meters high mountains. The Vessertal biosphere reserve begins near the village .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1144 and belonged to the county of Henneberg and its office Schleusingen . In addition to the landlords, the Veßra monastery also had local rights. After agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry predominated in the Middle Ages, there were several cutting and grinding mills from the 16th century. In 1611 there were 489 inhabitants. During the Thirty Years' War the place suffered a lot, the number of houses decreased from 80 in 1631 to 48 in 1659, the population loss was around two thirds. It was not until the early 19th century that the losses of the war were made up again.

In 1714, a former cutting mill became the Eisenhammer Erlau , which offered work to many residents during the time it was in operation until 1884. Another important modern branch of business was wool weaving, which 25 of 55 craft businesses in 1841 were engaged in. After 1853 the glassworks between Raasen and Schleusingen offered work, and in 1914 a glassworks was also built in Erlau.

In 1815 the place came with the Electoral Saxon Office Schleusingen to the Schleusingen district of the newly formed Prussian province of Saxony , where it remained until 1945. During the Second World War , 91 women and men, mainly from Poland, had to do forced labor in agriculture in Erlau . During the GDR era, Erlau was particularly a location for lighting production. From 1967 onwards, after the construction of a forest pool, a campsite and several holiday bungalows, the place gained importance as a recreational area.

On October 3, 1991, Erlau was incorporated into the parish of St. Kilian . This was incorporated into Schleusingen on July 6, 2018.
