Breitenbach is a district of Schleusingen in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .

location

The place is located on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest southeast of Suhl . Breitenbach lies on the Vesser and directly on the southern border of the Vessertal biosphere reserve .

history

The place is one of the oldest places in the area. According to a source, Breitenbach was first mentioned in a document on May 10, 1183. Other sources cite the year 1144 as the first documentary mention, to which the local anniversaries have always referred. The village used to be a typical forest village with forest workers, charcoal burners and farmers. There were also sawmills, a blacksmith's and nail smiths and a scythe hammer, and weaving mills. There were 32 master weavers with 65 looms.

Until 1815, the place belonged to the Henneberg or Electoral Saxon office Schleusingen and then came to the Schleusingen district of the newly formed Prussian province of Saxony , where it remained until 1945. Today the village is a modern place of residence with 900 inhabitants. Due to its close proximity to the Vessertal biosphere reserve, Breitenbach is a state-approved resort. Its corridor extends far into the Vessertal .

In 1991 the place became part of the large community of St. Kilian and was incorporated into the town of Schleusingen on July 6, 2018 .
