history

Evangelical Lutheran Church

Hinternah was first mentioned in a document in 1189. The place name refers to the Nahe river . The place was once owned by the Counts of Henneberg , the Veßra monastery and the Frauenwald monastery also owned the site . Hinternah belonged to the Henneberg , later Sachsen-Zeitzer , then the Electoral Saxon Office Schleusingen . The place had around 180 inhabitants around 1500, in 1611 there were around 650.

During the Thirty Years War , the population fell to around 180, and it took around 200 years until the mid-19th century to return to the population it had before the Thirty Years War. The inhabitants found their livelihood in forestry, animal husbandry and wine trade. There were also several mills, including cutting mills , and an iron hammer .

In 1815 Hinternah came from the Kingdom of Saxony to the Schleusingen district of the newly formed Prussian province of Saxony , where the place remained until 1945. From 1900 to 1926 there was also a glassworks on site, and the cutting mills became sawmills. In 1911 there were 1177 inhabitants. Since no industry worth mentioning developed there, numerous residents were already working in the factories in the surrounding areas by 1900.

In 1945 the place became part of the state of Thuringia . In 1950 he moved to the Hildburghausen district , which belonged to the GDR district of Suhl from 1952 to 1990 . Even in GDR times, mainly cattle, especially chickens, were kept in the place. Hinternah has been a recognized resort since 1953 and has twice received the title The Beautiful Socialist Village in the GDR .

On October 16, 1993, Hinternah was incorporated into the new community of Nahetal. On August 1, 1996, this merged with other places to form the community of Nahetal-Waldau . This in turn was incorporated into Schleusingen on July 6, 2018.
