Johann Georg Eck (born January 23, 1745 in Hinternah , † November 20, 1808 in Leipzig ) was a German philologist . He was professor for ethics, politics and poetry at the University of Leipzig and in the summer semesters 1788, 1794, 1798, 1802 and 1806 its rector.

Life

Eck was the son of pastor Johann Georg Eck (1709–1784), who was pastor from 1735 to 1757 in Hinternah in the Saxon office of Schleusingen and then until his death in Kühndorf . In Schleusingen he attended grammar school from 1753 to 1763 and then studied theology at the University of Halle . In 1765 he acquired his master's degree and passed the candidate examination as a theologian the following year.

Since 1768 Eck was a member of the academy of non-profit science in Erfurt . In that year he also began to give lectures at the University of Leipzig, where he became associate professor of philosophy in 1770 and full professor in 1781. While he was teaching ethics and politics as a professor from 1782, he took over the chair of poetry in 1791. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University and was Rector of the Alma Mater in the summer semesters 1788, 1794, 1798, 1802, 1806 .

For more than 30 years, Eck was the master of the chair of the Leipzig Freemason Lodge Minerva to the three palms .
