From 1816 to 1944 the place belonged to the administrative district of Erfurt of the Prussian province of Saxony , before it subsequently became part of the state of Thuringia . From 1949 to 1990 it belonged to the GDR and from 1952 was in the Suhl district .
Kühndorf was affected by the persecution of witches from 1603 to 1660: Ten people were involved in witch trials , at least three women were executed, two women were sentenced to expulsion from the country, the outcome of four trials is unknown. The first victim in 1603 was Margaretha Jacob.
