Waldau is a district of the town of Schleusingen in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .

location

Waldau is about ten kilometers (as the crow flies ) northeast of the district town of Hildburghausen , at the foot of the Thuringian Forest and 410 meters above sea level. The lock flows through the village . The Oberrod district belongs to the village of Waldau .

history

Waldau was first mentioned in a document in 1299. The first settlers were forest farmers and craftsmen. Not far from the village of Waldau, a branch of the medieval trade route known as "Hohe Straße" ran from Nuremberg to Leipzig across the Thuringian Forest. This gave Waldau significance as a resting place and a customs post. The place belonged to the county of Henneberg and in 1660 came to the Duchy of Saxony-Zeitz .

The Protestant church was built at the beginning of the 17th century. Hornmühle , Appelsthaler Mühle and a paper mill used the energy of the lock. The field name Harzwald refers to the trade of the Harz scrapers and pitch burners.

In 1718 Waldau came to the Electorate of Saxony . At that time the place belonged to the Schleusingen office . On April 3, 1763, Duke Xaver of Saxony granted the place the right to hold an annual and cattle market. From 1815 to 1945 Waldau belonged to Prussia ( Schleusingen district ). The place was named a "state-approved resort" in 1977.

On August 1, 1996, Waldau and its neighboring towns merged to form the community of Nahetal-Waldau . This was incorporated into Schleusingen on July 6, 2018 .

Culture and sights

Waldau's district of Oberrod is located in the immediate vicinity of the mountain lake Ratscher with a variety of tourist offers. In the village of Oberrod, the St. Wolfgang Chapel is worth seeing.
