Church in Waldau

The listed Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waldau in Waldau , a district of the town of Schleusingen in the Hildburghausen district ( Thuringia ), was built at the beginning of the 17th century.

history

In 1575 the previous church was struck by lightning, which resulted in the demolition of the church. Only the sacristy and the chancel remained. The parish began building the new church at the beginning of the 17th century. Carved dates, 1601 on the nave and 1624 on the tower, indicate the construction phase. It was consecrated in 1628. In 1962 the interior was repainted. In the years 2002/03, the facade of the tower was renewed, the roof was re-slated and the tower decoration with button and hen re-gilded. In 2007, the repair work on the roof and the facade of the nave followed.

The pastoral post in Waldau has been vacant since 1999. The administration of the parish is carried out by Hinternah .

description

The choir with the chancel , which is spanned by a ribbed vault, is located under the church tower and has a Gothic design. The medieval frescoes in the chancel, which show consecration crosses, Christ as the judge of the world and the apostles Andreas and Paul , originate from the construction time of the chancel and decorate it.

The nave, a solid structure, has a gable roof covered with red tiles. The portals are on the north and west sides and each have a pointed arch. The windows are designed both square and with pointed arches. The interior, which is spanned by a wooden barrel between the two-storey wooden galleries , is separated from the choir by a pointed triumphal arch . The eastern front wall is decorated with a painting depicting Christophorus .

Furnishing

The furnishings include a crucifix that stands behind the altar and was made in 1662 in the workshop of the Salzung sculptor Conrad Bastheimer. The pulpit , located on the southern triumphal arch pillar, is dated to 1719. A figure depicting John the Baptist supports the pulpit with figures of the apostles . The sound cover bears the risen Christ with a winner's flag.

On the upper west gallery is the organ , which was built in 1847 by the organ builder August Witzmann from Stadtilm .

Four chilled cast iron bells from 1947 hang in the church tower . In addition, there is the baptismal bell in the bay window on the tower roof, an older bronze bell.
