St. Kilian

St. Kilian was a municipality in the district of Hildburghausen in the Franconian south of Thuringia, which was incorporated into the city of Schleusingen in 2018. The eponymous district gave it its name.

2713 inhabitants lived in the municipality (as of December 31, 2016) on 55.57 km² . The community of St. Kilian was on the southern slopes of the Thuringian Forest in UNESCO - Vessertal-Thuringian Forest .

The Vesser flows into the Breitenbach in the village of Breitenbach . The alder from Erlau also flows into the Breitenbach in St. Kilian .

According to a public survey, the municipality of St. Kilian was created on October 3, 1991 through the voluntary amalgamation of the previously independent municipalities of Altendambach, Breitenbach, Erlau, Hirschbach and St. Kilian. It had about 2815 inhabitants. Hirschbach became the administrative seat of the municipality.

Since December 31, 2012 the city of Schleusingen has been the fulfilling municipality of the municipality of St. Kilian. A population of less than 3000 residents made this necessary in addition to a now honorary mayor. On July 6, 2018, St. Kilian was incorporated into the town of Schleusingen.

mayor

The first and only full-time mayor was Willi Büttner (Free Voters) from the foundation of the municipality until the end of June 2012. He was followed as Honorary Mayor André Henneberg (Free Voters).

District Mayor

When it was incorporated into Schleusingen, André Henneberg (Free Voters) became mayor of the district of St. Kilian. He was followed in May 2019 by Robin Lützelberger (Free Voting Association Schleusingen).

Attractions

  • In St. Kilian there is a church of the same name from 1690.
  • There is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Altendambach , which was consecrated in 1617.
  • Adlersturm, an observation tower on the 849.9  m high Adlersberg . In the immediate vicinity, the mare house is an information center for the Middle Thuringian Forest Nature Park with a mountain hotel.
  • UNESCO biosphere reserve Vessertal, known as the "most beautiful valley in Central Germany" between Breitenbach and Vesser invites you to hike with clear streams, natural mixed forests and flowering meadows. The area recognized by UNESCO in 1979 as the first biosphere reserve in Germany was expanded several times and is now called the "UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Thuringian Forest ".

Economy and Infrastructure

St. Kilian was a rural residential community with the settlement of trade, crafts, tourism and other services. Around 90 companies provided a total of 1200 jobs in the community. The largest employer was Wiegand-Glashüttenwerke GmbH with the Schleusingen plant with 230 employees (as of 2011). Other companies concentrated on the part of the "Friedberg" industrial park belonging to the municipality.

traffic

The Friedbergbahn runs directly through the villages of St. Kilian, Erlau and Hirschbach to Schleusingen and Suhl , which was closed in 1997. However, a museum railway association is planning to use the route in museum traffic. The closest regular train station is in Suhl and offers almost hourly connections to Erfurt , Meiningen and Würzburg .

Line 200 of WerraBus GmbH runs through Erlau and Hirschbach and offers hourly connections to Suhl and Schleusingen on weekdays . The bus line 809 connects all villages of the district with each other and with Schleusingen and Hinternah / Schleusingerneundorf at irregular intervals , but does not run on weekends.
