Church in Altendambach

The Evangelical Lutheran Church Altendambach in Altendambach , a district of the town of Schleusingen in the district of Hildburghausen ( Thuringia ), was consecrated on December 9, 1617. The listed building received its present appearance in the 18th century.

history

There is evidence that a chapel existed in Altendambach before 1570. Today's church was consecrated on December 9, 1617. A small porch on the west side was built in 1822. In the 18th century, a half-timbered floor was added to the nave for the installation of a further gallery . A major repair was carried out in 1852. As part of extensive repairs, the gallery and the half-timbering were dismantled again in 1963. At the beginning of the 2010s, the parish had the church roof re-covered and the bell cage and bells modernized.

Altendambach belonged to the parish of St. Kilian for centuries . From 1856 to 1990 it had its own pastor. Since then the pastor's post has been vacant and administration is carried out by St. Kilian. There is a branch church in Hirschbach .

Design and equipment

The choir tower church is a stone block construction. The church tower houses the choir room in the massive basement . The upper storey is a slated half-timbered construction, which is closed by a pointed helmet with a tower button. On the west side is the tower clock, on the north side in the roof there is a small bay window with the hour bells. Three chilled iron bells hang in the tower , which were cast in 1922. The nave has a gable roof with red tiles. The entrances are on the north side in a pointed arch portal and on the west side in a porch.

The interior of the church consists of the nave and a Gothic choir, which is spanned by a ribbed vault with medieval frescoes and has pointed arched lead glass windows on two sides . The chancel is equipped with a modern altar, a font , probably late Gothic, and a crucifix from the 18th century.

The nave, separated from the chancel by a triumphal arch , is characterized by the pulpit , which stands on the southern triumphal arch pillar, and the single-storey gallery. Both are painted with figurative representations. The fields of the pulpit show the four evangelists with their symbols as well as the apostle Paul , Moses with the tablets of the law and Elias. Old Testament kings and prophets are depicted on the southern gallery, and John the Baptist , Jesus Christ and the apostles with their respective symbols on the northern gallery .

The organ on the northern gallery dates from 1964 and is the work of Schleusinger organ builder Gustav Kühn.
