Joachim Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein (born March 1, 1954 in Hahnstätten , Unterlahnkreis ) is a German diplomat who was ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia between 2013 and 2016 and ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ecuador between 2016 and 2019 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1972, Marschall von Bieberstein completed his military service in the German Armed Forces between 1973 and 1974 and began studying law at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg in 1974 , which he completed in 1979 with the first state examination in law. A subsequent post-graduate studies at Indiana University (IU), Bloomington / Indianapolis , USA, he graduated in 1981 with a Master of Public Affairs from (MPA). After his return to Germany, he completed the legal clerkship at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg from 1981 and passed the second state examination in 1984.

Afterwards he began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service in 1984 and entered the Foreign Office after its graduation in 1986 . After serving as Second Secretary and Advisor for Domestic Policy and Consular Affairs at the Embassy in Sri Lanka from 1986 to 1989 , he was First Secretary and Head of the Consular Section at the Embassy in Greece from 1989 to 1991 , before returning to Germany from 1992 to 1992 1995 was a consultant for federal-state issues in the European department of the Foreign Office.

Subsequently, Marschall von Bieberstein was Deputy Head of the Consulate General in Montreal between 1995 and 1998, where he was Head of the Department for Culture, Universities, Press and Consular Affairs and then between 1998 and 2001 lecturer in Legation and Deputy Head of the Department for Legation Law and Law of International Organizations in the legal department of the Federal Foreign Office. He then served from 2001 to 2004 as Political Advisor for Security Issues at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City and from 2004 to 2007 as Permanent Representative to the Ambassador to Kazakhstan .

After his return to Germany, he took on the role of Head of the Department for International Research and Technology Policy at the Foreign Office between 2007 and 2010 as a lecturer in the first class of the Legation, and then from 2010 to 2013 as Head of the Economic Department at the Embassy in the United Kingdom .

In 2013, Marschall von Bieberstein became ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia and received his accreditation there on October 17, 2013. He thus succeeded Wolfgang Moser , who had retired. From 2016, when he took over from Alexander Olbrich , until his retirement in 2019, he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ecuador .
