Wiegand-Glas is a medium-sized family company and one of the largest container glass and PET preform manufacturers in Germany . In the four plants in Steinbach am Wald (Bavaria), Großbreitenbach , Ernstthal and Schleusingen (all three in Thuringia), more than eight million glass containers for the food and beverage industry are produced every day . The company employs around 1950 people in the German container glass factories.

history

The company has its origins in the Rhön , where Niclas Wiegand began manufacturing glass in the second half of the 16th century . At the beginning of the 20th century, the Wiegand family operated six glassworks with central administration in Großbreitenbach. In 1926 Otto Wiegand acquired the glassworks in Steinbach am Wald, which was the only one that remained in the family after the Second World War. All other glass works were expropriated. After the reunification, the two managing directors Joachim and Konrad Wiegand took over VEB Glaswerke Großbreitenbach in 1991 from a joint venture with the trust . Since then Wiegand-Glas has been producing again at two German locations. The third German location was added with the acquisition of Thüringer Autovermietung GmbH Schleusingen in December 2011. In 2015 TBG Schleusingen was fully integrated into the rest of the group. At the beginning of 2016, the Ernstthal glass factory was taken over as the fourth German production site .

The family company is now run in the fourth generation by Nikolaus Wiegand and Oliver Wiegand. Under her leadership, the company continuously invests in the existing production facilities.

Group of companies

In addition to the four glassworks for the production of container glass ( beer bottles , wine bottles , canning jars ), the group of companies has owned a plant for the production of PET preforms and PET containers as a further branch of the company since 1997 . With around 140 employees, PET-Verpackungen GmbH Deutschland ( PEVEDE ) in Großbreitenbach, Thuringia, produces more than eight million preforms and almost one million containers every day. Production was gradually expanded so that all common preform weights for 0.2 l to 5.0 l non-returnable PET bottles are produced. Packaging solutions with various barriers and multilayer preforms as well as PET bottles and cans are also offered.

In the service center at location Schleusingen the machine mounting takes place swing top closures (iron) as well as the introduction of beer bottles in bottle crates (Einkasteln).

A company for processing waste glass ( Glas-Cycle GmbH in Wandersleben ) and a forwarding agency ( Wiegand-Logistik GmbH ) are also integrated into the group of companies.
