Chain conveyors are designed for transporting bulk material suitable conveyor systems ( mechanical continuous conveyor with pulling means ) in which an endless chain with entrainment runs (crosspieces) in a closed trough. Depending on the shape of the carrier, it can be conveyed horizontally, (steeply) rising or vertically.

Scraper conveyors are similar in structure to trough chain conveyors, but in contrast to trough chain conveyors, the conveyor trough is open at the top, which means that they can only convey horizontally or with a slight incline. In doing so, drivers push the material to be conveyed on the housing base for discharge. They are particularly suitable for bulky goods such as straw , wood chips, milling and turning chips , but are also used in mining.

They are used in particular as scrapers in the glass industry . Discarded, defective workpieces are conveyed through shafts into the fragment scraper. Since the glass is still glowing red and has a temperature of a few hundred degrees, the conveyor technology must be protected from the extreme heat from years of uninterrupted stress. That is why the trough is filled with water to the top and can therefore cool the glass quickly. The floors of the scrapers are lined with hard basalt to protect against mechanical loads .
