Karl Adolf Lorenz
Karl Adolf Lorenz (born August 13, 1837 in Köslin ; † March 3, 1923 in Stettin ; also Carl Adolf Lorenz ) was a German conductor , composer and music teacher .
Lorenz first grew up in Köslin and at the age of 16 came to Stettin , where he attended the Marienstiftsgymnasium and at the same time received music lessons from the composer Heinrich Triest . From 1857 he studied at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin and received his doctorate here in 1861 to Dr. phil. At the same time he pursued musical studies and was a student of Siegfried Dehn and Friedrich Kiel . Several conductors followed, for example at the Meixner choral society in Berlin, and from 1864 at the Stralsund music society . In 1866, Lorenz succeeded Carl Loewe as the municipal music director in Stettin and also worked as an organist, high school singing teacher and conductor of the music and teacher choirs. Appointed Royal Professor in 1885, Lorenz retired in 1910.
Lorenz composed the oratorios Winfried (1888), Otto the Great (1890), Croesus (1892), Maiden of Orleans (1895), Golgotha op.65 , Das Licht op.80 (1907) and Hymn to Art for solos, choir and orchestra op. 25. Furthermore, the two operas Harald and Theano (1893) and Die Komödie der Irrungen op. 40, a symphony in E flat major op. 74, the piano trio in E flat major op. 12, and several motets, organ works, songs, trios, school chants and a school singing lesson. Under the pseudonym Moritz, he set several pranks by Wilhelm Busch's Max and Moritz to music for piano and voice.
Lorenz was an honorary citizen of his hometown, a memorial plaque was attached to the house where he was born. One street in Köslin and one in Stettin bore his name.
