Musik und Kirche is a German Protestant journal with an ecumenical focus for church musicians and Christian theologians .

history

It was founded in 1929 by Walter Blankenburg , Christhard Mahrenholz and Karl Vötterle and has been published by Bärenreiter-Verlag without interruption since then, with the exception of the 1945 and 1946 volumes . Christhard Mahrenholz was its first editor. The new paper became the leading forum for Protestant church music from the very first year . Programmatically, it was committed to the renewal movement of Protestant church music after 1920 , which was reflected in the support of the Bach and Schütz Renaissance, the organ movement , the singing movement in the community and youth work, as well as a clear rejection of Romanticism .

During the Nazi dictatorship, the editors embarked on a course that fluctuated between unambiguous addresses of devotion and an unwavering adherence to the revelation of Jesus Christ. The end of the war did not bring about a turning point for the time being. In the person of Walter Blankenburg , who was the editor of “Music and Church” from 1941 to 1981, there was a recognizable continuity.

It was only gradually that there were signs of opening and distancing. The contempt of the romantics only gradually gave way. In the perception of modernism, however, windows opened up as early as the 1950s, when works by Ernst Krenek , Wolfgang Fortner and others were reported. The variety of positions and the lack of aesthetic specifications were now beyond doubt.

After Blankenburg's departure, an era began under the editorship of Renate Steiger , which, in addition to the chronicle of current church music events in theological Bach research, created a platform. When Klaus Röhring took over the editorial office in 1996, it opened three times. The avant-garde of composers who created “New Music in the Church” and thus stood between the chairs of modernity and traditional church music, now had space for their, often extreme, positions. On the other hand, the horizon expanded beyond the German-speaking area. “Country booklets” on England , Sweden , the Netherlands , Switzerland , the USA and the Baltic countries provide an introduction to other church music landscapes.

The consideration of ecumenical aspects and the observation of Catholic church music finally became a matter of course.
