Matthias Schneider

Matthias Schneider (born December 15, 1959 in Münster / Westphalia) is currently professor of church music (with a focus on artistic organ playing and improvisation) at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

Matthias Schneider heads the Greifswald Organ Summer Academy , which he founded in 1996, and is in international demand both as an interpreter and as a musicologist.

His work focus (as an interpreter and researcher) is particularly on the music of the 17th and 18th centuries for keyboard instruments. As an interpreter, as a soloist or member of an ensemble, he plays baroque music, (premier) performances of new music and is a regular participant in music festivals (e.g. Israel Festival, Vendsyssel Festival, etc.). He is responsible for lectures, introductions to works, discussion concerts and interpretation courses and is also active as a juror .

Life

Schneider studied in Münster, Essen and Basel (1984 A-exam for church music, 1992 lic. Phil. Musicology, 1995 doctorate) and attended numerous master classes.

From 1984 to 1993 Schneider worked as a district cantor in Schopfheim (South Baden) and as a musicologist at the University of Basel . From 1989 to 1995 he led an organ class at the University of Church Music in Heidelberg . Since 1994 he has been Professor of Church Music / Organ at the Institute for Church Music and Musicology, University of Greifswald. From April 2006 to March 2010 he also held the office of Dean of the Philosophical Faculty. He is currently (2016) Vice Dean of the Philosophical Faculty.

Schneider played a role in the implementation of the Bologna Process in Germany, especially as a member of two project groups funded by the Federal and State Commission for the modularization of study programs and the introduction of the credit point system at German universities.

Matthias Schneider was Vice President and has been President of the Society of Organ Friends since May 1, 2013, as well as a member of the scientific advisory board of the International Heinrich Schütz Society and the International Dieterich Buxtehude Society .
