The International Dieterich Buxtehude Society (IDBG) is a registered association for the research and maintenance of the works of the Lübeck Marian organist and composer Dieterich Buxtehude (around 1637–1707). She organizes concerts and symposia and coordinates publications .

history

The first Dietrich Buxtehude Society was founded in Lübeck as early as 1932, but it did not last long. The leading Buxtehude researchers of their time came together in it to research the master's works.

The association was founded on May 8, 2004 in Buxtehude's place of work in Lübeck . It is part of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities , which is Lübeck's oldest citizens' initiative . A decree of the Lübeck Senate of November 25, 1795 gave her legal capacity and thus the status of a legally competent association of old Lübeck law .

Act

The Buxtehude Society is managed by an honorary board of directors. With Ton Koopman , the association is headed by a president who is considered a leading authority in historical performance practice, is both a practicing musician and researcher and has emerged from his complete recording of all of Buxtehude's instrumental and vocal works.

Dieterich Buxtehude's music is characterized by beauty of sound and practical orientation. His organ music is one of the most impressive and original achievements of instrumental music of the 17th century and forms the climax of the North German organ school . In terms of composition, Buxtehude is one of the most important musical personalities of the Baroque and Northern European musical tradition.

Membership is free and not tied to any particular status. In 2014 the association had more than 100 natural and two legal persons as members. The Buxtehude Society is particularly committed to maintaining Buxtehude's instrumental and choral music. In doing so, she tries to enrich cultural life. This is accompanied by research into the biography of the composer, organist and teacher Dieterich Buxtehude. In addition, it promotes music education and musicological events that correspond to the goals of the association.

The IDBG is organizing the “European Buxtehude Festival” together with the Church Music Association of the Marienkirche in Lübeck.
