Live and act

Johann Voorhout: Hausliche Musikszene, 1674. Depicted are presumably Johann Adam Reincken (at the harpsichord ) and Dieterich Buxtehude , possibly also Johann Theile . On the left of the picture is probably the painter himself

The painter Johannes Voorhout was the son of the Amsterdam master watchmaker Cornelis Voorhout. Johannes Voorhout's apprenticeship began with five years in Gouda , followed by another five years in Amsterdam with Johannes van Noort. In 1670 Voorhout married in Amsterdam. In the next few years he worked in Hamburg . In 1707 he moved back to Amsterdam, where he died in 1723. Voorhout is a typical representative of Amsterdam history painting at the end of the 17th century. He also created genre pieces in the style of Caspar Netscher and Gerard ter Borch . The collections of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum include a large painting by Voorhout and three small works that the painter created for Petronella Oortman's dollhouse. His painting Domestic Music Scene from 1674 is in the Museum of Hamburg History . The picture - an allegory of friendship - not only shows the Hamburg organist and composer Johann Adam Reincken , but is also the only picture that shows the composer and organist Dieterich Buxtehude .
