Markus Karas

Markus Karas (born May 28, 1961 in Flensburg ) is a German organist , conductor and composer .

Life

After graduating from high school, Markus Karas studied at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main . He passed both the church music state examination ( A-examination ) and the artistic maturity examination (diploma) with the final grade "very good". He passed the concert exam in 1987 in the organ with Edgar Krapp and received the academic degree of concert soloist. Karas has been organist and cantor at Bonn Minster since 1989 . In addition to the Münster choir and the Cantate Domino chorus, he has also directed the BonnSonata women's choir and the Bonn children's and youth choir since 2001 . In 1992 he was appointed regional cantor for the Bonn city dean's office and has since been invited to the Bonn Beethoven Festival as a conductor and organist. Karas is co-editor of the magazine Musik und Kirche and is active worldwide as a lecturer, composer and concert organist. His radio and television recordings began in 1984, and since 1994 Karas has also released CDs. His compositions were published by the publishers Bärenreiter and Bosse (Kassel), Carus (Leinfelden-Echterdingen), Dr. Butz (Bonn), Editions Musica Ferrum (London), Katholische Bibelanstalt (Stuttgart) and Strube (Munich).

Honors

  • 1977 - Scholarship from Dr. Hoch Conservatory, Frankfurt a. M.
  • 1985 - Winner of the Limburger Dom organ competition (1st prize)
  • 2005 and 2009 - 1st prize with BonnSonata at the state choir competitions in North Rhine-Westphalia in Siegen and Bonn
  • 2006 and 2010 - 3rd prize with BonnSonata at the federal choir competitions in Kiel and Dortmund
  • In 2008 Karas received the Sudeten German "Culture Prize Music" awarded by the Free State of Bavaria
  • In 2009 he was appointed to the Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts (Munich)
