Life

Christoph Gottlob Grundig was the third of nine children of the Dorfhain pastor Georg Gottlob Grundig and his wife Maria Dorothea, geb. Gerhard. The pastor's son took private home lessons and attended the Kreuzschule in Dresden from 1717 to 1719 . During this time his uncle Johann Zacharias Grundig was Kreuzkantor there.

This was followed by a visit to the grammar school in Freiberg from 1722 to 1727. Here Bergrat aroused Johann Friedrich Henckel Grundig's interest in mineralogy. From 1728 to 1731 Grundig studied philosophy, history, antiquity, Protestant theology and languages at the University of Leipzig .

After completing his master's degree, he became a private teacher in Eisleben with the von Leipziger family. Together with this family he moved to Dresden in 1733 .

In 1737 he was given the post of Protestant pastor in Hermannsdorf . Here he married Anna Elisabeth Steinmeyer in the same year. By 1748 the marriage had five children.

From 1747 he published the monthly magazine attempts of useful collections on natural and art history, especially from Upper Saxony .

Grundig earned particular merit with the publication of his historical critical inventory of old and new writers from the earthquake (1756). Under the influence of the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 , Grundig published the world's first printed seismological specialist bibliography.

In 1749 he became pastor in Schneeberg and in 1758 pastor and superintendent in Glauchau . In the following year he went to Freiberg as superintendent and school inspector . Here he supported the establishment of the Bergakademie in 1765 , the oldest still existing mining science educational institution in the world.

Christoph Gottlob Grundig died in Freiberg in 1780. He was buried in Freiberg Cathedral of St. Mary .

Grundig's estate included a large library and a 3,300 mineral collection.
