Jörg Vollmer

Jörg Vollmer (born September 7, 1957 in Bremen ) is a general in the army of the German Armed Forces and since April 22, 2020 commander of the Allied Joint Forces Command of NATO in Brunssum ( Netherlands ).

Military career

Training and first uses

Vollmer joined the Bundeswehr in 1978 and was trained as an officer in Ahlen and Hammelburg until 1979 . From 1979 to 1982 he studied economics and organizational sciences at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg , graduating with a degree in business administration .

After completing his studies, Vollmer was also deployed in Hamburg until 1985 as a platoon leader in the 3rd company of the 173rd Panzer Grenadier Battalion. He then served in the same battalion in 1986 as an intelligence officer ( S2 ). In 1986 he was transferred to Lübeck , where Vollmer was company commander of the 2nd company of Panzergrenadier Battalion 172 until 1989 . From 1989 to 1991 he served in Munster as company commander of the 5th company of the Panzer Grenadier Training Battalion 92. From 1991 to 1993 he completed the 34th general staff course at the command academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg and was then appointed major .

Service as a staff officer

After this training he was employed as a consultant for military-political principles and bilateral relations in the command staff of the armed forces (FüS III 1) in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn .

In 1995 he was transferred to Neustadt (Hessen) , where he served as an operations staff officer (G3) in the staff of the 14th Panzer Brigade until 1997. During this time Vollmer was deployed abroad from November 1996 to May 1997 as adjutant to the deputy commander (logistics) and commander of the IFOR / SFOR support command in Zagreb . Back in Germany, he took over command of Parachute Battalion 373 in Doberlug-Kirchhain in 1997.

From 1999 to 2001 he was head of the planning exercises specialist center at the Hamburg Leadership Academy. From 2001 to 2002, Vollmer completed an Advanced Operational Art Studies Fellowship (AOSF) at the School of Advanced Military Studies in Fort Leavenworth , Kansas .

From 2002 to 2004 he was Head of Department G3 / G2 in the Armed Forces Office in Bonn under Major General Dieter Henninger . He then headed the department (FüS III 29) Military Strategic Basics in Bonn until October 2006 in the headquarters of the armed forces; German-French working group on military cooperation under the head of the department Wolfram Kühn .

Service in the rank of general

On October 27, 2006, Vollmer took over command of the Jägerbrigade 37 in Frankenberg, Saxony, from Markus Kneip . In this role he was appointed brigadier general. Under his command, the brigade was renamed to Panzergrenadierbrigade 37 on April 1, 2007 . From January 10 to October 3, 2009, Vollmer and parts of the brigade were deployed abroad again, this time as part of the ISAF in Afghanistan , where he was commander of the German contingent and at the same time regional commander North (RC North). He handed this command over to Jürgen Setzer after nine months . During his deployment in September 2009, the subordinate Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Kunduz was responsible for the momentous air strike .

On October 19, 2010, Vollmer handed over command of the Frankenberger Panzergrenadierbrigade 37 to Gerd Kropf . Vollmer himself was transferred to Münster , where he took over the post of Chief of Staff of the 1st German-Dutch Corps on October 5, 2010 . On October 6, 2011, as major general , he took over command of the Special Operations Division in Stadtallendorf , which he handed over to Brigadier General Eberhard Zorn on June 12, 2014 .

Vollmer then took over his new post as Deputy Inspector of the Army and Commander of the Army Command on June 25, 2014 in the General-Olbricht-Kaserne in Leipzig from his predecessor Lieutenant General Reinhard Kammerer . On July 16, 2015 Vollmer finally succeeded Lieutenant General Bruno Kasdorf as the 20th Inspector of the Army. The previously deputy commander of the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, Lieutenant General Carsten Jacobson , succeeded him as deputy inspector of the army and commander of operations.

On February 13, 2020, Vollmer handed over the post of Inspector of the Army to his successor Lieutenant General Alfons Mais .

On April 22, 2020, Vollmer took over the post as Commander of the Allied Joint Forces Command of NATO in Brunssum (Netherlands) from General Erhard Bühler . This was accompanied by the promotion to general.
