Gerd Josef Kropf (* 20th March 1956 in Saarlouis ) is a Brigadier General of the Army of the Armed Forces out of service . His last assignment was from March 2016 to March 2020 in command of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Command .

Military career

Training and first uses

In 1976, Kropf joined the German Army with the 144th Panzer Battalion in Koblenz . From 1978 onwards he was trained as an officer . From 1979 to 1981 Leutnant Kropf was deployed as platoon leader of the 2nd Company of Panzer Battalion 344 in Koblenz. After that, Kropf was transferred to Munster , where he served as first lieutenant and platoon leader at Combat Troop School II until 1985 . In 1985 he was reassigned to Koblenz and served there while being promoted to captain until 1988 as company commander of the 4th Company of Panzer Battalion 341. After that, Kropf served for a year as a logistics officer ( S4 ) in the staff of Panzer Battalion 343 at the same location.

In 1989 he was transferred to Veitshöchheim , where he completed training as an operations and training officer (S3) in the staff of the 12th Panzer Division under the command of Hartmut Foertsch and Hartmut Bagger until 1992 . From 1992 to 1993, Kropf served again as company commander, this time with the Panzerjägerkompanie 360 ​​in Külsheim .

Service as a staff officer

While being promoted to major , Kropf was transferred to Torgelow in 1993 , where he served as the deputy battalion commander of the 413 tank battalion until 1996. From 1996 to 1999 he was deputy head of the training base for the simulation-supported framework exercise battalion (SIRA-Btl) in Ellwangen . From 1999 to 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Kropf commanded tank battalion 393 in Bad Salzungen . In 2001, Kropf completed his first foreign assignment within the framework of SFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Rajlovac camp as an operations staff officer (G3) of the 4th German Army Contingent ( GECONSFOR ).

In 2003, Kropf was transferred to the Bonn Federal Ministry of Defense , where he served from 2004 as a consultant for operational tasks in the army in the command staff of the army (FüH III 4) under the direction of the chief of staff, Hans-Otto Budde . In 2004 he was transferred to Torgelow , where he served for a year as deputy brigade commander of the 41st Panzer Grenadier Brigade under Josef Niebecker .

In 2005 Colonel Kropf completed another assignment abroad, this time as part of KFOR in Kosovo , where he served in Prizren as commander of the 13th German contingent and deputy commander of the Multinational Brigade South . Back in Germany, Kropf was transferred to Letzlingen , where he headed the Army Combat Training Center from 2006 to 2010 .

Service as a general

On October 19, 2010, Kropf took over command of the Panzer Grenadier Brigade 37 from Jörg Vollmer in the Saxon town of Frankenberg , where he was promoted to Brigadier General a short time later. Since January 1, 2013 he has been Deputy Commander and Commissioner for Reservist Affairs, Territorial Tasks Command of the Bundeswehr in Berlin .

In March 2016, he followed Christof Munzlinger as commander of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional command.

In June and July 2019, in his position as commander of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional command, he was a member of the command and control team for fighting forest fires in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

He handed over the post as commander of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania regional command to Brigadier General Markus Kurczyk in March 2020 and retired after 44 years of service.
