The 12th Panzer Division was a division of the Army of the Bundeswehr . The division command had been in Veitshöchheim since 1965 . The division was stationed in Bavaria , Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate and was disbanded in 1994.

Association badge

The division's association badge takes up the symbolism of the coat of arms of their Franconian homeland. The background shows the Franconian rake in silver-red. This symbol appears both in the coat of arms of Baden-Württemberg and in the Bavarian state coat of arms , i.e. in the coats of arms of the division's home countries. The second symbol is a notched flag on a silver lance pole, quartered in red and gold, as it is also included in the coat of arms of the Franconian city of Würzburg . It resembles the flag of the old Duchy of Franconia. The division's coat of arms was framed by a black, interwoven, silver cord. The brigade coats of arms differed only in the different colored borders according to the traditional WRG scheme of the Army (Brigade 34 white, Brigade 35 red, Brigade 36 yellow).

history

Army structure (I) and II

As the last of the planned large formations of the army, the division was put into service on January 1, 1961 with headquarters in Tauberbischofsheim under the II Corps in Ulm . Initially, the division included the 36th Panzer Brigade . In 1961 the division was still called the 12th Panzer Grenadier Division. In 1961, the division was assigned the 35th Panzer Brigade . On March 17, 1965, the division, whose staff had meanwhile moved from Tauberbischofsheim to Veitshöchheim near Würzburg, was assigned to NATO .

Army structure III until dissolution

In 1970 the division moved to III. Corps ( Koblenz ). The 14th Panzer Brigade moved from the 5th Panzer Division in 1977 to the 12th Panzer Division. Note: Army Structure III existed until 1980. Army Structure IV came into effect in 1980, which resulted in the renaming, dissolution and reclassification of units. The following list and structure is partly from Army Structure III and partly from Army Structure IV, so in parts it is not complete and not completely correct. You were subject to:
