The Division Süd (spelling usually Division SÜD ) was a large unit of the army of the German Bundeswehr . The division was most recently subordinate to the Army Command .

The division existed temporarily with this name until the end of 2014 in the course of the reclassification to the structure HEER2011 . Along with the establishment of the Southern Division at the Veitshöchheim location , the Air Mobile Operations Division was dissolved, some of its troops and some of the troops of the 10th Armored Division were taken over by the Southern Division. The old 10th Panzer Division was disbanded in December 2014 and the Southern Division was then renamed the 10th Panzer Division.

history

The division was formed on October 1, 2013 from parts of the staff and the staff company of the 10th Panzer Division from Sigmaringen and the airmobile operations division (DLO) in Veitshöchheim, which is to be dissolved. The first commander was General Benedikt Zimmer , who had previously been in command of the Air Mobile Operations Division. The Southern Division serves as the formation staff for the formation of a new 10th Armored Division, which will take over parts of the Airmobile Operations Division, which is to be dissolved, and will lead the brigades of the previous 10th Armored Division. The designation south indicates the upcoming role of the 10th Panzer Division, which, like the 1st Panzer Division in northern Germany, will be the only mechanized division in the southern half of the country. In the course of the implementation of the implementation plans for the realignment of the Bundeswehr and for taking on the structure HEER2011 , the Southern Division took over the Panzer Grenadier Brigade 37 (Frankenberg) on October 1, 2013 , which was now led by the Airmobile Operations Division after the 13th Panzer Grenadier Division was dissolved. The Artillery Demonstration Battalion 345 (moved to Idar-Oberstein , formerly Artillery Training Regiment 345 in Kusel ) and the fuse Battalion 12 ( Hardheim assumed), currently both the Airmobile Operations Division were assumed on January 1, 2014, the Division South. The Airmobile Operations Division will subsequently be disbanded after further units have been surrendered. On January 1, 2014, artillery battalion 131 (formerly observation tank artillery battalion 131 ) moved from the 100 artillery regiment to its new location in Weiden ( formerly Mühlhausen / Thuringia ) for the southern division. Both brigades of the 10th Panzer Division , the 12th Panzer Brigade ( Amberg ) and the 23rd Gebirgsjägerbrigade (Bad Reichenhall), were subordinated to the Southern Division at the end of June 2014. As of July 2014, the inactive Pioneer Battalion 905 in Ingolstadt (until then Gebirgsjägerbrigade 23) was directly subordinate to the division.

The old 10th Panzer Division in Sigmaringen was disbanded at the end of 2014 and the South Division with staff in Veitshöchheim was also given the designation 10th Panzer Division. This new 10th Panzer Division continues the tradition (and also the association badge) of the old 10th Panzer Division. First commander of the new 10th Panzer Division became the last commander of the Southern Division.

structure

The southern division was finally divided into the following units:
