The military area command V was a military area command in the territorial army of the Bundeswehr . The task of this command authority was the territorial defense in defense area V. Defense area V comprised the state of Baden-Württemberg . The military area command was set up from 1956. For many years the headquarters were in Stuttgart , from 1994 in Sigmaringen . From 1994 the management of the defense area was carried out by the merged staff "Wehrbereichskommando V / 10th Panzer Division ". The military area command was decommissioned in 2001.

history

Location of the staff of defense area V: The Graf Stauffenberg barracks in Sigmaringen

The military area command was set up from January 23, 1956 in Böblingen and from May 1957 in Stuttgart- Bad Cannstatt as part of the territorial army. It was under the Territorial Defense Command until 1969 . From 1958 to 1961 TV rods (territorial defense rods ) were set up in the defense area , which were reclassified into defense district commands from 1963 and were subordinate to the defense area command. The following defense district commands were set up:

From 1964, the establishment of subordinate defense district commands began in the defense districts . The military area command was incorporated into the army from 1969 to take over Army Structure III and subordinated to the Territorial Command South .

After the end of the Cold War , the territorial army was significantly reduced in size. In Army Structure V , the military area commands and division headquarters were merged. The Defense District Command V merged on April 1, 1994 with the 10th Panzer Division . The merged staff was called "Wehrbereichskommando V / 10th Panzer Division". The headquarters were relocated from Stuttgart to Sigmaringen . The merged staff was under the II Corps . The separation between a field army subordinate to NATO and the territorial army , which remains under national command even in the event of a defense , was thus organizationally softened in the peace structure. Only in the event of a defense would the merged staffs have probably been separated again.

In 2001 the merger was reversed and the territorial army was dissolved as a part of the army . The 10th Panzer Division continued as a division; the military area command V was decommissioned on October 1, 2001. Many of the tasks in the defense area were assigned to the completely reorganized Military Area Command IV "Southern Germany" , which switched to the newly established armed forces base .

structure

The staff itself was partially active and should grow from around 250 to around 800 soldiers in the event of a voltage. After taking Army Structure IV :

  • 10 non-active liaison commands (to the state government of Baden-Württemberg , to the NATO corps and divisions and to the neighboring WBKs)
  • the partially active staff company (in addition to the staff three security trains to secure the command post )
  • the VBKs 51, 52, 53 and 54
  • the partially active homeland security brigade 55
  • the inactive Homeland Security Brigade 65
  • the inactive support command 5 (only the staff was partially active)
  • the area telecommunications leader 5
  • the active military training area commanderships Münsingen and Heuberg
  • the inactive hospital regiment 75 (only the staff was partially active)
  • the non-active Engineer Regiment 75
  • the active field hunter battalion 750
  • the non-active Feldjäger Battalion 751
  • the non-active transport battalion 750
  • the non-active NBC defense battalion 750 (WHNS troop unit directly subordinate to the WBK)
  • the non-active repair company 750
  • the inactive supply company 750
  • the non-active ordnance disposal platoon 7500

In addition there were the units of the Territorial Command South stationed in the military area :

the staff of the Territorial Command South ( Mannheim ),
the headquarters of Telecommunication Command 850 (Mannheim), Pioneer Command 850 (Mannheim) and Sanitary Command 850 (Mannheim). These commands at brigade level were subject to other inactive units.
the independent field replacement battalion 852 ( Kraichtal )

In peacetime the cadre replacement battalions (WL / ErsBtl) of the Territorial Command South were subordinate to individual VKKs. In Baden-Württemberg these were u. a. the military leader replacement battalions 866 ( Kirchzarten , near VKK 533), 867 ( Hechingen , near VKK 541), 868 ( Amstetten , near VKK 542), 869 ( Weingarten , near VKK 543), 870 ( Renningen , near VKK 511), 871 ( Schorndorf , near VKK 512), 872 ( Siegelsbach , near VKK 513), 873 ( Ludwigsburg , near VKK 511), 874 ( Oftersheim , near VKK 522), 875 ( Pforzheim , near VKK 523) and 876 ( Neuhausen ob Eck , at VKK 532).

The military area command carried a union badge with the following blazon :

" Tied by a silver cord with woven black thread, divided into black, red, gold in a golden central shield a one-headed black eagle , the head turned to the right, the wings open, but with closed plumage, beak, tongue and fangs of red color ( Federal eagle); the middle shield below accompanied by the black Roman numeral  V. "

The shield division corresponded to the flag of Germany . The motifs of the association badge were also similar to the coat of arms of Germany . The federal eagle was the German heraldic animal . He was depicted similarly on the troop flags . The close reference to the coat of arms and the flag of Germany made it clear that the territorial army and its military area commands remained under the authority of the national commander even in the event of a defense and were not assigned to NATO .

The association badges of the command authorities in the territorial army were particularly similar. In particular, the association badges of the higher-level territorial commands and the other military area commands differed only in their labeling. Also, the Badge of the Ministry of Defense was up on the board almost identical. The silver / black braided border of the military area commands symbolized the position below the Federal Ministry of Defense, which accordingly had a "higher quality" golden cord.
