Headquarters of the staff: the historic Stengel barracks

The supply command bundled the units of the repair and supply troops at the level of the territorial command . While in the field army at the level of the corps the repair and the supply were organized in separate units (three repair and supply commands each ), it was decided in the territorial army at the level of the territorial command to concentrate the forces in the supply commands. Since the Territorial Command South, in contrast to the other Territorial Commandos, covered the operational area of two corps, the supply command 850 was also planned as a "sister association".

The main task around 1989 was the logistics in the operations room of the Territorial Command; Repairs only played a subordinate role. The supply command was responsible for the operation of the rear (main) depots of the army. The supply command secured the supplies for the troops of the territorial command and carried (military) material from the rear areas to (advanced) depots or transshipment points of the field army, where further distribution by the supply force of the field army, at the level of the corps by the southern German supply command , took place. The secondary task of the supply command was the operation of field post facilities . For the operation of the medical depots , close cooperation with the southern German medical commandos , which in turn had considerable transport capacities, was necessary. To support the deployment and to provide logistical support for the allied armed forces , Supply Command 860 was able to support the South German support commandos depending on the situation . For the handling of Operation- and fuels the supply command was on the pipeline pioneers of the pioneer 850 commands instructed in the region of the supply commands several storage tanks operated.

A secondary task was the testing and repair of the weapon systems , vehicles (as far as these were stored in depots) and electronic devices such as telecommunications technology of the territorial command. The main burden of the repairs at the level of the Territorial Command South was borne by the Supply Command 850 with its units of the repair troops and several repair works. The subordinate defense areas led their own units of the repair force. The depot maintenance groups of the supply command carried out repairs in all material maintenance levels .

In peacetime around 1989 the supply command, like almost all units of the territorial army, consisted of only a few active soldiers. In the case of defense , the supply command could after mobilization by the convening of reservists and service commitment of civilian employees to around 5,000 men grow up . Overall, the size of the supply command after the mobilization corresponded to the size of one of the brigades of the field army.

Note: The equipment depots were in Crailsheim , Feldstetten , Germersheim , Hardheim , Herbolzheim , near Landsberg (see Landsberg-Leeder special ammunition depot ), Neckarzimmern (see Gipsstollen in Neckarzimmern ), Siegelsbach (see Heeresmunitionsanstalt Siegelsbach ), Spaichingen . Ammunition depots were located in Breitengüßbach , Hohenbrunn (see Heeresmunitionsanstalt Hohenbrunn ), Kirrlach , Pflimmern , Schierling (see ammunition main depot Schierling ), Steinheim , Urlau (see Heeresmunitionsanstalt Urlau ), Wermutshausen . Medical depots were set up in Efringen-Kirchen and Neugablonz .

history

The supply command was set up in the Stengel barracks in Germersheim from April 1, 1970 to take over Army Structure III . The supply command reported operational readiness on October 1, 1970.

After the end of the Cold War , the Supply Command 860 was decommissioned on March 31, 1994 at around the same time as the South Territorial Command was dissolved. Logistics brigade 2 was later planned in Germersheim .

Association badge

The supply command did not have its own association badge due to its planning as part of the dependent units, which were directly subordinate to the territorial command, analogous to corps troops . The soldiers therefore wore the association badge of the higher-level territorial command.

As a "badge", the internal association badge of the staff and the staff company " pars pro toto " was sometimes used imprecisely for the entire supply command. Similar to the beret badge of the repair troop, it showed a gear as an indication of the mechanical systems to be repaired . The grenade was taken from the association badge of the Depot Organization Command , which until 1970 led the depots now subordinate to the supply command. Similar to the tactical sign of the transport associations , a horizontal line symbolized the main supply routes on the road or rail . Blue was the weapon color of the armies.
