John Chapple

Sir John Lyon Chapple , GCB (* 27. May 1931 ) is a former officer in the British Army , who most recently as Field Marshal (Field Marshal) between 1988 and 1992. Chief of Staff was the British Army. He was also Governor of Gibraltar from 1993 to 1995 .

Life

Officer training and promotion to general

John Lyon Chapple completed his schooling at Haileybury and Imperial Service College and went to military service (national service) in 1950 as a lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) in the Royal Artillery one. In the following years he also studied at Trinity College at the University of Cambridge and later found employment as an officer and staff officer in the infantry regiment The King's Regiment , in the Line Infantry Regiment South Lancashire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's Volunteers) and in the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Rifle Regiment Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles) .

In March 1976, Brigadier General (Brigadier) Chapple successor to Brigadier John Whitehead as commander of the of the 48th Gurkha Infantry Brigade (48th Gurkha Infantry Brigade) incurred Gurkha Field Force and remained in this use until November 1977, after which Brigadier General Michael Carleton-Smith's Succeeded. He subsequently moved in February 1978 to the Ministry of Defense , where he was to succeed Brigadier General Roland Guy Senior Staff Officer to the Chief of the Defense Staff ( Chief of the Defense Staf ) , Marshal of the Royal Air Force Neil Cameron respectively from September 1979 by Admiral of the Fleet Terence Lewin . He remained in this post until June 1980 and was then replaced by Air Commodore David Brook.

After that sparked Major General (Major-General) John Chapple in June 1980 Major General Roy Redgrave as commander of British forces in Hong Kong (Commander British Forces in Hong Kong) , and had this command held until October 1982, after Major General Derek Boorman became his successor. He himself, in turn, took over from Major General Derek Boorman in October 1982 as Director of Military Operations in the British Army General Staff (Director of Military Operations) and held this position until he was replaced by Brigadier General Leslie Busk in November 1984. In December 1984, he returned once again back in the defense bar and took over as lieutenant general (Lieutenant-General) to the newly created post of Deputy Chief of Defense Staff for Personnel and Programs (Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff (Personnel and Programs)) , which he to when he was replaced by Air Marshal David Parry-Evans . During this time he was beaten on December 31, 1984 to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), so that from then on he carried the suffix "Sir".

Chief of the General Staff and Governor of Gibraltar

Thereupon General Sir John Lyon Chapple replaced General James Malcolm Glover as Commander-in-Chief of the UK Land Forces in June 1987 and remained in this position until September 1988, after which General Charles Huxtable became his successor there. During this time he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB) on June 11, 1988 . Most recently, he took over in September 1988 as the successor to Field Marshal Nigel Bagnall as Chief of the General Staff of the British Army, which he held until he retired from active military service in February 1992. His successor was then General Peter Inge . He was also promoted to Field Marshal when he retired in September 1988 .

In April 1993, Chapple, who is also Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), succeeded Admiral Derek Reffell as Governor of Gibraltar. He held this office until December 5, 1995, when Admiral Hugo White became his successor.
